The LED & Tourism Directorate’s core function is to create an enabling environment for local economic development by focusing on:

• Promoting and enhancing the SMME sector
• Developing and supporting business co-operatives
• Agricultural development (developing emerging farmers into mainstream farming and development of agro-processing projects)
• Promoting tourism in Fezile Dabi District

The Directorate has the following units:

• LED unit responsible for:
  • SMME development and support
  • Co-operative development and support
  • Agricultural development
  • Interactive sessions with local municipalities
  • Food security programmes
• Tourism unit responsible for:
  • Tourism awareness campaigns
  • Tourism training – “How to start your own B&B” and “Customer First”
  • Grading of accommodation establishments
  • Development of tourism community projects
  • Assistance to Local Tourism Organisations
  • Advertising the district in tourism magazines
  • Upgrading of municipal resorts

 SPORTS, RECREATION, ARTS AND CULTURE AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT UNIT

SRACS is a unit within the Department of Local Economic Development and Tourism. The unit’s responsibility is to provide sound development programmes and community services in order to improve the quality of life of the society in the District.

The unit has the following sub-units:

• Sports and recreation
• Arts and Culture
• Community development

The core functions of the unit are as follows:

• To promote sports programmes among the communities e.g. adventure sports, OR Tambo games and rural school sports.
• To sustain arts and culture by developing programmes to assist amateurs to reach professional level.
• To promote community development programmes, (ECD and CBO centres)
